Hi, I’m Ben. I'm glad you're here because your presence (even viritual) completes the connection. I've been broadcasting a signal in the form of these songs I write for many years, searching for you and now you're here, tuned in. Thank you. I don't like to talk about myself, but you would not be here if you did not want to know so let me explain. I’m a husband, a father of two, and a web developer by day. But that’s probably not what you’re here to find out. I lead with these facts, because they help shape who I am. Before all of these blessings, however, I was a boy with a deep, abiding love for music and I don’t think that’s ever changed.
I’ve been writing songs for 25 years. I see songs as portable, distilled moments captured in time, flexible enough to express the subtlest distinctions and ironies of life on one level, while on a deeper level, broadcasting the raw emotion of an experience that requires no explanation beyond the feeling in your gut. I’ve worked hard to be a worthy vessel for a good song and I believe I know how to do that now, even if I don’t always pull it off.
I’ve made five independent albums to date, each one, a little bit better than the last I hope. My latest release: I'm Just the Same as I Was I am particularly proud of. Continuing to "make records" has not been an easy feat because it’s required me to stay up later, dig deeper and believe more than I’ve ever thought I could. At the end of a long working day, after the kids are in bed, I begin to work on my music. Sometimes it’s finishing a song, or overdubbing a guitar solo and other times, it’s rebuilding my web site, designing the artwork for a CD or booking shows. It gets complicated doing it all on my own, and I would be lying if I told you I don't get overwhelmed and discouraged some days -- never by the music, but the "promotion" aspect of it can be about as much fun as a dental visit for me.
I love to perform, though this aspect of my musical life has had a limited range of motion geographically speaking. I play close to home here in Atlanta, Georgia for now, but have plans to widen the circle to play regionally in the Southeast. I perform with an amazing band comprised of drummer, Kevin Leahy (Shawn Mullins, BoDeans, Zac Brown), guitarist Charles Williams (Bonaventure Quartet, Bernadette Seacrest) and bassist John Willingham (Olde Dog). But more frequently I do solo acoustic performances in coffeehouses, small clubs like Eddie’s Attic and house concerts.
Over the years I have performed and/or collaborated with a wide range of talented artists, most of whom you may never have heard of, but there have been a few who have found wide commercial success like Gillian Welch, Shawn Mullins, Kristian Bush and Jennifer Nettles of Sugarland and John Mayer. I will always consider myself a student in pursuit of a better song and I have learned from some of the best teachers. As part of this pursuit I dedicate time to interviewing various artists on my podcast Take Me to The Bridge.
