Nathan Wakeman My cousin who is more of a brother to me. Nathan has an undeniable gift, a meticulous eye and the sweetest heart of anyone on this planet.
Humor |
Rather Good This guy's stuff is so irreverent, riduculous and undeniably funny. Be careful, not all of his animations are PG.
The Onion An old classic, but still as funny as ever. "Congress Debates the Coolness of Rush" is one of my all-time favorite headlines from there.
Music |
Brandon Bush A consumate musician and the kindest guy I know in the cut-throat music industry. He played piano, organ and wurley on my second solo record, "The Overall Distance" and his also wrote the drum loop for "Space" on that record. He has played with almost everyone and he is currently playing keyboards with Train.
Caroline Herring I played a writers in the round show at Eddie's Attic one night with Caroline and her songs completely blew me away. She's been compared to Iris Dement, but she's got something going that's all her own.
David LaMott I met David many years ago when I was in college and he was playing at a noisy local bar where the TV was blaring and no one was listening. He smiled and played his heart out just the same. He has persevered and made a place for himself in the music business. His sincerity and commitment to making the connection between the artist and the audience is unmatched.
David Wilcox David changed the course of my musical aspirations. After seeing him perform live, I became a deciple for a short while. I despirately wanted to have what he had --- his precision, his amazing gift with metaphors, his openness. I have moved on from there, but his influence has left an unquestionable mark.
Glenn Matullo Glenn is a tremendous recording engineer. I have know him for years, and whether he is recording some awful novice songwriter, a jingle for some snack cracker company or the latest Indigo Girls record, he treats them all with the same amount of respect, diligence and kindness.
John Gorka John is hands down, my favorite songwriter. He crafts these intricate lyrical songs with quirky characters and brilliant use of language. I got to talk with him one night a few years ago after a show he played at Eddie's and was delighted to find that he is so genuine and approachable.
John Mayer I met John about six years ago (1998ish) when he first moved to Atlanta and began playing at Eddie's Attic. We played a number of shows there together and hung out some. I knew from the first time I heard him play that he would quickly move on to bigger things -- I think everybody did. He just has an undeniable gift.
Kevin Leahy A wonderful drummer and brilliant guy. Kevin has played on many recordings and is currently playing with the BoDeans.
Kristian Bush Kristian Bush will always land on his feet. I think he could write and play a song with only a paperclip and an empty beer can and everyone would buy it. He has that kind of magical ability.
Martin Sexton There is no better singer than Martin Sexton. I first heard him at an Empty the Shelters benefit that we were both playing at with Shawn Mullins years ago. He was this short little guy with a big old Gibson guitar slung across his back. Nobody in the room had ever heard of him before. When he took the stage and opened his mouth, no one could forget him. He stole the show.
Matthew Kahler Matthew is a one-of-a-kind songwriter and one of the most powerful singers I have ever had the privilege to share a stage with.
Michael Levine Michael is part machine part man. The crazy stuff he can pull off with his looping pedal amazes me. He is a joy to share the stage with.
PasteMusic The best collection of music on the web. These guys meticulously select all of the artists they sell on their site.
Pat Walsh I played an intimate little show at the Red Door Playhouse with this guy and I had never heard him before. Pat absolutely blew me away with his wonderful songs and gracious demeanor. His music is truly an undiscovered pleasure that you should not deprive yourself of any longer.
Shawn Mullins A quality songwriter, an old friend, and a big influence. I will always remember what I learned from Shawn when we traveled together in 1995.
Telegram My friend Troy Bieser's band. In my opinion, the best band in Atlanta right now. Rob, the bass player is a monster and Troy's moody, crooning and reckless guitar antics are not to be missed.
The Bonaventure Quartet This is a band of truly amazing musicians. Bass player Kris Dale occasionally sits in with Screen Door and has done some recording with me. One of the guitarist, Charles Williams in addition to being a phenominal player also happens to be my son's guitar teacher. Their music is in the style of hot club jazz of the 20s and 30s and the gypsy guitar music of Django Reinhardt.
The Weepies I met these guys at a show we shared at Eddie's Attic on October 20th 2004. Steve and Deb are wonderful to watch onstage together. Their songwriting styles are so compatible, their harmonies are stunning and it's great to see people so in love doing what they love.
Technology |
Grant Skinner This guy writes some truly amazing flash applications.
Jeff Tapper Jeff is a brilliant Flash and ColdFusion developer who has taught me so much in the short time I have known him. He teaches, lectures and has written several books.
Radio Paradise Hands down, this is the best Internet radio station around. They play an amazing variety of music with lots of forrays of the beaten path.
